Here you can read about the background, motivation and full story behind the idea and development of the RaceOfficer Timer app.
History and background
The primary driver behind the RaceOfficer Timer application was the simultaneous identification of a critical pain point for race officials and an accessible technical opportunity.
The core problem centered on timekeeping complexity: Race officers often juggle multiple watches, struggling to keep track of which device displays the time for which competitors. Furthermore, essential time information needed by the race officer is often not directly accessible when needed most. Providing race officers with necessary timekeeping data quickly and easily was identified as a clear area for improvement and the limitations of existing single-purpose timers required a fresh, comprehensive approach.

Platform choice
The choice of platform was driven by two factors: First, many race officers already utilize a Garmin device as their daily-use watch, suggesting a large and receptive potential user base. Second, from a technical standpoint, the Garmin Monkey development platform is relatively straightforward to approach from a programmer’s perspective and distribution via the Garmin Connect IQ ecosystem made deployment and updates simple for end users.
This accessible environment allowed us to quickly focus on our main objective: delivering a superior, single-device timing solution for the active race officers out there.
Project goal
Our goal is to create an essential tool that doesn’t require users to carry more than one watch or dedicated timer during a day on the water. This single-device approach not only increases comfort and convenience for the race officer but also provides more mental energy for other tasks. By leveraging the Garmin hardware, we gained the unique ability to implement advanced features that significantly exceed those found in a standard sailing start watch – and we hope to build even more advanced solutions in the future – take a look at the roadmap.
